Day 1: From Nyakalengija to the Serene Nyabatiba Camp
Your adventure begins by the foot of the mountains in Nyakalengija. We recommend an early morning arrival to ensure you have ample time to rent essential equipment and familiarize yourself with your dedicated guides and porters. The trail sets off through flourishing farmland, leading you to the park boundary. From here, you'll venture into a dense forest that runs alongside the Mubuku River. As you cross the Mahoma River tributary, prepare yourself for a challenging but rewarding ascent onto a vast ridge, leading you to the tranquil Nyabitaba hut. This leg offers the chance to hear the distant calls of chimpanzees and spot the black and white colobus, the playful blue monkey, and the vibrant Rwenzori turraco. Your trek for the day will span 6-7 exhilarating hours.
Day 2: From Nyabatiba's Calm to the Majestic John Mate Camp
Embrace the day as you move from Nyabitaba, tracing a path that descends into the forest, leading you to the iconic Kurt Shafer Bridge. This marks the point just below where the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers merge. As you venture through the bamboo forest, brace yourself for a stretch of moss-covered rock that might challenge your footing but will surely enchant your senses. Upon reaching the Nyamuleju rock shelter, the imposing Mount Stanley and Mount Speke reveal themselves in the distance. Traverse the enchanting zone of giant heather, lobelia, and groundsel, and after navigating through the mesmerizing bog, you'll find yourself at John Mate Hut. Here, you can unwind, enjoy a hearty dinner, and rest for the night. This segment of your journey will span 7-8 captivating hours.
Day 3: Descending from John Mate to Nyabitaba and Back to Nyakalengija
Your final day commences with a descent from John Mate, retracing your steps to Nyabitaba Camp, a trek of approximately 5-6 hours.
