Day 1: Nyakalengija's Beginning to the Calm of Nyababita Camp
Embark on the famed Central Circuit starting at Nyakalengija. An early arrival ensures enough time for equipment preparations and introductions to your seasoned guides and porters. The journey commences through flourishing farmlands, leading you to the park's boundary. Here, a dense forest along the Mubuku River awaits, with the Mahoma River tributary marking your path to the massive ridge of Nyabitaba hut. En route, be serenaded by chimpanzee calls and witness the black and white colobus, playful blue monkeys, and the vibrant Rwenzori turraco. Expect 6-7 hours of immersive trekking.
Day 2: From Nyababita's Whispering Trees to John Mate Camp's Majesty
Depart Nyabitaba and descend through the forest to the iconic Kurt Shafer Bridge. Traverse the bamboo forest, navigating a stretch of moss-covered rock. From the Nyamuleju shelter, witness Mount Stanley and Mount Speke before entering zones graced with giant heather, lobelia, and groundsel. Your day culminates at the John Mate Hut, promising a warm dinner and tranquil night. This leg spans 7-8 hours of adventurous trekking.
Day 3: John Mate's Heights to Bujuku Camp's Wonders
Descend from John Mate Hut, crossing the Bujuku River and entering the mystic Lower Bigo Bog, home to giant lobelias. As you cross the bog, Bujuku Lake unveils itself, flanked by Mt. Baker and Mt. Stanley. Bujuku Hut, nestled between these grand peaks, is a sanctuary for acclimatization, especially for those eyeing the summits. A fulfilling 4-5 hours of trekking awaits.
Day 4: Bujuku's Dawn to Kitandra Camp's Elevation
Leaving Bujuku behind, the trail ascends through the enchanting Groundsel Gully. Turning left, the trail leads to the mesmerizing Scott-Elliot pass with panoramic views of Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke. A descent past the Kitandara Lakes culminates in dinner and an overnight stay at Kitandara camp, marking 5-6 hours of exploration.
Day 5: Kitandra's Serenity to Guy Yeoman's Legacy
From Kitandara, embark on a steep ascent to Freshfield Pass, offering glimpses of the Congo to the west and Mount Stanley to the north. Descending through high alpine mossy terrains, you'll encounter Bujongolo, the historic base camp of the Duke of Abruzzi's 1906 expedition. Day 6: Guy Yeoman's Farewell to Nyakalengija's Embrace
Begin the descent from Guy Yeoman, navigating the cliffs of Kichuchu. Crossing the Mubuku River, a bamboo forest guides you back to Nyabitaba, completing the legendary circuit. Continue your descent, wrapping up your journey by evening after 7-8 hours of trekking.
